The beginning

Sweetgrass came into my life about 25 years ago when I stumbled into a Sobriety Pow Wow that was taking place on the Colville Indian Reservation, outside of Inchelium, Washington. My two sons and I camped there for the weekend, enjoyed the food, culture, and the wonderful, friendly people. It turned out to be the opening door to a heritage I didn't know was mine at the time. It was like coming home.

Over the next 14 years, while I learned more about my heritage from some awesome elders and medicine people, my love affair with sweetgrass continued to grow. Some years ago I bought 180 sweetgrass plants, and planted two rows of plugs. Well, as you can see from the above picture, the sweetgrass loves me and this soil as much as I love it. It has multiplied beyond my wildest dreams or expectations. At times it is a race to see if I can keep it contained faster than it propagates. Those few plants are now several billion, that make up fields of rows, as in the picture above.

The growing, harvesting, and making of the products, is all done with respect for the spiritual nature of the medicine that I am blessed to be a steward of. To honor the sweetgrass and keep products as pure as possible, we do not use chemical fertilizers, pesticides, or herbicides. We fertilize our plants a couple times a year, with manure tea made from what is left by the range cattle that roam the land around my place. This means the sweetgrass is in its most natural state when it comes to you.

When the sweetgrass is the desired length, (dependent on which product is to be made), it is cut by hand, laid in the open fresh air to dry after which time it is gathered, sorted, and inspected, before it is either stored for future use or made into the designated item to fill an order. Since our location is out of the way, we handle all orders via the postal service.

Each order is produced with extreme reverence and care as we understand the spiritual value of the products we provide. If your order is larger than 50 pieces per item ordered, it may take a couple of extra days to put together as we braid the products, as ordered, for optimum freshness, and quality control
